First, do no harm

video 05:48 min. 2023

First, do no harm presents an orthopedic examination of a foot, performed by an orthopedic surgeon and filmed in slow motion. By feeling, manipulating, bending, and extending the foot, the surgeon’s hands assess its range of motion. This method is known as palpation (from the Latin palpare — “to touch, feel gently, caress”) and is used to examine the surface of the body through the examiner’s hands. The video incorporates textual excerpts and quotations from the Hippocratic Oath. As the earliest known written formulation of ethical principles for the medical profession, the oath has served as a cornerstone of medical ethics in the Western world.
